The Monadnock store is located in Chicago’s historic Monadnock building located at 53 West Jackson in downtown Chicago. The North half of the building was built in 1889-91, the south half was built in 1891-93. 16 floors and 197 feet tall, this was the world’s tallest masonry building! The north part, famed for its lack of ornamentation, is the last skyscraper to employ a wall-bearing building method. The exterior walls are six feet thick at the base and give the building a monumentally tough, straight-forward look. The south half is an early example of steel-frame construction, revealed by its narrow piers and wide windows.
The interior has been beautifully restored and is straight out of old Chicago circa 1920 with deco grating and fixtures, exposed woodwork, and marble floors. Styled to resemble an Italian espresso bar, it is a bit more minimal and modern than our Broadway location, with dual 3-group La Marzocco’s to handle the busy downtown crowd. Stop by soon!
