Intelligentsia Coffee mourns the passing of a friend this week. Abby Mandel, the founder of the Green City Market, ended her battle against cancer and she will be missed greatly.
As was written in the GCM’s weekly email: “Abby embodied our vision, our hopes and – for many years – our very existence. She dragged herself out in the black of early morning to assure that everything was right, every Market Day. From the alley to the park, she would skitter from stand-to-stand, pears to peaches to crepes to corn, inspecting, marveling and then luring the consumer into an understanding of this Market's mission. She succeeded beyond even her own wildest dreams. And she gifted us with that dream. It is not surprising that Abby's last day was a ‘Market Day.’ She was secure in the knowledge that we are now 10 years old and growing. We miss her already.”
Intelligentsia Coffee has supported Abby, the Green City Market, and its mission for many years. Doug Zell, Intelligentsia’s founder, is a current member of the Board of Directors, and the company donates freshly brewed coffee every week. Abby’s family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Abby's legacy: The Green City Market; 2732 N Clark St, Suite 301; Chicago IL 60614 (773-880-1266).
